Continental Reifen invests 13.4 billion baht to expand Thai tire production capacity
Bangkok, 28 March 2026 – Mr. Narit Therdsthiirasak, Secretary General of the Board of Investment (BOI), announced that the Project Consideration Subcommittee, delegated by the BOI Board, has approved the investment promotion application for Continental Tyres (Thailand) Co., Ltd. for an additional investment of 13,411 million baht in radial tire manufacturing for automobiles and other vehicles.
This expansion involves constructing a new factory building and expanding the existing plant at the WHA Eastern Seaboard 4 Industrial Estate in Rayong province. The goal is to increase radial tire production capacity from 4.8 million units to an additional 3 million units per year, totaling 7.8 million units annually. The project will create over 600 new jobs in the area, bringing the total workforce to more than 1,500 employees. The company will utilize domestic raw materials, including natural rubber and synthetic rubber, amounting to over 1,700 tons per year.
Global Expertise: Continental Group and Its Tire Manufacturing Footprint
Continental Group, headquartered in Germany, is the fourth-largest tire manufacturer globally, with over 150 years of history. In 2025, the company’s tire division generated revenue exceeding 14 billion euros (approximately 540,000 million baht). The group operates 20 tire manufacturing plants across 16 countries worldwide. Continental established its presence in Thailand 15 years ago and set up its factory in Rayong Province five years later.
This facility is one of the largest plants within the Continental network and has achieved the highest energy efficiency standards. It utilizes modern, energy-saving machinery and employs automated systems for raw material and product handling. Furthermore, the plant has installed a 6.7-megawatt solar panel system, accounting for 13% of the total electricity consumption in the facility.
Meeting the Demands of Thailand’s Automotive Industry
The decision by Continental Tyres to expand its investment comes as Thailand’s automotive and electric vehicle (EV) industry continues to grow regionally. The Rayong facility will serve as a strategic production hub to supply tires for both original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and the replacement market. The product portfolio includes passenger car tires, small commercial vehicle tires, motorcycle tires, and high-performance EV tires.
Electric vehicles require high-performance tires with exceptional durability to handle the unique powertrain and rapid acceleration characteristics of EVs. EV tires are significantly more expensive than conventional tires, often 2-3 times higher in price, reflecting their advanced engineering and specialized requirements. This expansion reflects Continental’s commitment to supporting the evolving automotive landscape in Thailand and the broader Asia-Pacific region.
Commitment to Sustainability and Supply Chain Resilience
“Continental’s significant investment expansion underscores the confidence in Thailand’s potential as a global hub for high-quality tire manufacturing, aligning with both safety and environmental standards,” stated Mr. Narit. He added, “Under new global regulations such as EUDR, traceability is essential to ensure that raw materials are sourced from sustainable rubber plantations that do not harm forests. Thailand is well-prepared for this transition. This expansion not only adds value to natural rubber raw materials and improves the livelihoods of Thai farmers but also strengthens Thailand’s automotive supply chain.”
The tire industry is a crucial component of the automotive supply chain. Thailand currently ranks as the second-largest tire producer and exporter globally, trailing only China. Over the past five years (2020-2024), 41 tire manufacturing projects have received investment promotion approval, with a total investment value exceeding 112,000 million baht. Major global manufacturers with production bases in Thailand include Michelin (France), Bridgestone (Japan), Goodyear (USA), Continental (Germany), Sumitomo Rubber (Japan), Yokohama Tire (Japan), Zhongce Rubber (China), Principia Chengshan Tire (China), Linglong (China), Century Tire (China), and Maxxis (Taiwan).
