Thailand’s Automotive Market Landscape: Insights from Industry Leaders
Analysis of 2025 Trends and Future Outlook
The year 2025 marks a critical juncture for the Thai automotive industry, as leaders navigate a dynamic market shaped by evolving consumer behavior, government policies, and technological shifts. A consensus among industry experts suggests a year of recovery and strategic reorientation, moving away from the post-pandemic volatility towards a more stable and sustainable growth trajectory.
Market Overview and Projections
Analyzing the overall market, the first two months of 2025 saw a slight decline in new vehicle sales (January–February 2025), estimated at around 10%. This has led industry analysts to revise the projected total sales for the year down to approximately 530,000 units, from the earlier expectation of 560,000–570,000 units.
Mr. Vallop Chalermwongsawet, Managing Director of Hyundai Mobility (Thailand) Co., Ltd., shared his perspective on this development, noting that while the overall market is stabilizing, the electric vehicle (EV) sector is undergoing a significant transition.
Electric Vehicle (EV) Market Dynamics
The electric vehicle market, which experienced a surge in popularity during 2021–2023, is now settling into a steadier growth pattern. Projections estimate annual sales to hover around 70,000 units. This stabilization is attributed to the fact that the initial wave of “Pioneer” consumers—those early adopters eager to embrace new technologies—has largely saturated. This pioneer group represents roughly 3% of the market, or around 200,000 individuals, who have been the primary drivers of growth over the past three years.
Moving forward, the EV market is expected to be propelled by “Early Adopters,” a demographic constituting approximately 10% of the market, or around 700,000 people. This group is currently in a decision-making phase, likely waiting for further market maturation and infrastructure development.
Mr. Chalermwongsawet also commented on the long-term potential of EVs in Thailand. He believes the Thai electric vehicle market will likely reach a maximum penetration of around 30% of the total market share. This ceiling is largely constrained by the geographical size of Thailand, which significantly impacts the expansion of charging infrastructure and related services.
The Rise of Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid Vehicles
In contrast to the EV market’s stabilization, alternative energy vehicles, such as plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEV), are experiencing continued growth. Mr. Chalermwongsawet highlighted that the hybrid segment, in particular, expanded by an impressive 70% in 2024.
Industry experts suggest that this trend reflects consumer demand during the transition period from internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles to electrified powertrains. Furthermore, government incentives for these vehicle segments, coupled with growing consumer anxiety regarding the infrastructure and maintenance of all-electric vehicles, are driving this shift.
Hyundai’s Strategic Approach
For Hyundai, the strategic focus for 2025 remains anchored in maintaining its market position and expanding its product offerings. The company has set a sales target of 4,100 units for the year. Hyundai plans to introduce a total of six new models throughout 2025, covering a range of powertrains including EVs, hybrids, and ICE vehicles.
Mr. Chalermwongsawet emphasized that the company will adopt a cautious approach to importing vehicles. The planned start of local production at its assembly plant in Thailand is scheduled for January 2026. While Hyundai has adjusted its operational costs to align with the current market conditions, the company assures that these changes will not compromise its research and development efforts, production quality, or customer experience.
Geely’s Market Entry and Strategy
Mr. Narong Silakamol, CEO of Thanaburi Northeastern Co., Ltd., the official importer and distributor of Geely electric vehicles in Thailand, shared his insights into the market challenges. He noted that the Thai automotive market continues to face headwinds, similar to the previous year, and has yet to fully recover to pre-COVID-19 levels without sustained government support. Currently, most brands are operating near break-even points.
Mr. Silakamol suggested that the Thai government should consider supporting the auto market through measures such as easing credit access or allowing vehicle loan payments to be used for tax deductions, similar to the down payment reduction policy. He believes such measures would directly support consumers and the overall market. He also pointed out the potential need for support specifically targeting the pickup truck segment, which is a significant part of the Thai automotive landscape.
EV Price Competition
Regarding EV market trends, Mr. Silakamol anticipates that 2025 will see sales in the high-four-digit range, falling short of the six-digit targets predicted last year. However, he noted that 2025 is the final year of the EV 3.5 incentive scheme, which is expected to boost sales toward the end of the year.
The EV price war, while intense, is expected to cool down this year. Many brands have adjusted their pricing strategies with new model launches. Models that were initially priced at the higher end are now being recalibrated to align with market expectations and competitive positioning.
Mr. Silakamol also observed that as the EV market matures, the differences between products are becoming less distinct. To differentiate their brands, manufacturers must focus on brand building, innovation, and electric vehicle technology, along with ensuring robust after-sales service.
SUV Dominance in the Chinese EV Market
In the Thai EV market, Chinese brands have primarily focused on launching flagship models or SUVs. This strategy aligns with the fact that many Chinese vehicles sold in Thailand are imported as completely built units (CBUs). SUVs are the most popular vehicle type in China, and their versatile design appeals to a wide range of consumer needs, making them highly marketable.
Brand Building for Geely
While Geely has only recently entered the Thai market, Mr. Silakamol believes the brand has a certain level of recognition among consumers. Therefore, the company’s primary goal is to strengthen the brand’s presence, building upon the long-standing reputation of Thanaburi, which has 84 years of experience in the Thai automotive industry. Furthermore, the company is evaluating plans for local vehicle manufacturing in Thailand, as Thanaburi Assembly Automotive Plant (TAAP) possesses extensive expertise in vehicle assembly.
Great Wall Motor’s Market Strategy
Mr. Takashi Hata, President of Great Wall Motor (Thailand), commented on the EV market share projections for 2025. He estimates that the EV segment will account for approximately 15% of the total passenger car market, or around 70,000–80,000 units, compared to about 13% in 2024. He also predicts that the intensity of the price war will ease this year.
For 2025, Great Wall Motor plans to launch at least five new models. The company is focusing on expanding its model lineup within its flagship categories and is committed to becoming a brand with a comprehensive portfolio of electric vehicles and alternative energy vehicles.
